Artist’s Statement
I’m an artist, and a playful-yet-serious, personable person.
When I make images… of you, with you, for you, or just for myself… I attempt to be interesting and artful about it. Ideally I’m making things that make a person pause and linger over them. Creating art is fuel for my existence.
I’m serious about making art, no doubt. Equally serious as I was in my previous career, when I held numerous executive roles at companies in Silicon Valley. But I’ve also regularly brought a playful element even to serious work, throughout my life. I bring it with me wherever I go. Play is fuel too. It’s in me.
Finally, I enjoy interacting with people. I really do. You might be able to detect connectedness in my images as a result. I’m interested in peoples’ stories, and I’m interested in telling their stories visually, with a single image or a photo essay. I’m curious about the stories of people’s interests, personalities, histories, futures, passions, and dreams. Stories are the best.
I’m not the late great Rodney Smith. Thank goodness, or I would no longer be here! But Rodney’s creative desires and intentions are very tightly aligned with mine. Very tightly. To quote him:
“I want people to see the beauty and whimsy in life... I feel the need to reach out for its soul, its depth, and its underlying beauty.”
I can only hope that I sometimes achieve these objectives, in my own way.
So. If it suits you, join me in celebrating beauty and whimsy. Let’s tell stories and make some art. And let’s be curious about what we can make; it helps us feel fully alive!
Besides. I love me some good whimsy.
